ENGIE Solutions has chosen Caligo Industria’s flue gas cleaning and heat recovery solution as part of the modernization and emission reduction of the district heating plant of the City of Strasbourg. The overall project, led by ENGIE Solutions, integrates gas, biomass, waste heat and heat pump systems, the heat produced being fed into the city’s district heating network. These solutions will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the heat produced for the city.
“This contract is an important milestone for us and an indication that our solutions also meet the growing needs for sustainable development and energy efficiency in Central Europe. As a single deal, this is the largest in our company’s history,” says Oskari Salovaara, CEO of Caligo Industria.
The total budget of the modernization project exceeds 90 million EUR, including not only the renewal of production but also the expansion of the city’s district heating networks.
Focus on Heat Recovery
The solutions supplied by Caligo consist of two heat recovery units connected to heat pumps and a condensate treatment system that will be installed for the aftertreatment of the flue gas from the bio boilers. At the same time, the flue gas is washed, which improves air quality and reduces emissions. The system will enable significant heat recovery capacity, which will be fed into the district heating network. The solution supports the key objectives of the project:
- Reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 78%
- Increasing the share of renewable energy to over 88%
- Utilizing waste heat as part of the district heating network
Caligo’s solutions are an important part of the modernization of the district heating plant, as they can maximize the utilization of biomass and improve the energy efficiency of district heating.
Schedule and Scope of Delivery
The project will be implemented in stages: the delivery will be completed this year, and the implementation will take place next year. It is also possible to expand the system by increasing the heat pump capacity in the future. In addition to heat recovery equipment, the delivery includes flue gas ducts and chimneys, which are an essential part of the system.
“This project strengthens our position in France and serves as a valuable reference for future projects. We would like to thank ENGIE Solutions for the cooperation that has already started well, and we look forward to the progress of the project,” Caligo’s project team comments.
